Hi Guys,

Working with some 4K footage. Drop it in to a 1080p timeline. Spacial conform set to none. When I drop "Sharpen" on it, I lose a massive chunk of the image in the viewer. I can't transform or scale it back out and the image isn't cropped at all.

Does anyone know why this is or what can be done to fix it? I've attached a pic to show you what I mean.

Thank you,
Phil

You have to post screenshots of this. What sharpen setting are you using? What are the complete specs of your 4K media?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for this.

Here are shots with and without the sharpen added.

Sharpen settings are just the default from the default FCPX sharpener - It's set to 2.5.

4K was filmed on a Sony A7S mark 2. XAVC$ 4K. 24p. Timeline is 1080p. Spacial conform is set to none. FCP is latest version and I'm on a Mac Pro 2013.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry no idea what would cause that. Not seeing anything like that happen. Looks like it's automatically cropping it. Check the video inspector and see if there's anything weird going on there.

Be sure to convert your screen shots to JPEG files first.

can you show us the timeline at that specific point of time?

(to attach pics, just keep'em small (jpg, ~1000pix wide, no megabytes of png)

Hey... I solved the problem. I had shot the footage in 4K and then put it into a 1080p timeline. Then I had synced up a dual audio and created a compound clip. The compound clip consisted of 4K footage on a 1080p timeline plus a sound track.

When I sharpened the compound clip, the above error occurred. When I expanded the component parts and then applied the sharpen to the 4K video, it worked fine.

I know there must be a reason for this, but I am not sure. I am new to 4K and there seems to be a load of small differences that you need to learn when editing 4K. Spacial confirm, scale percentages etc.

Thanks to all for pitching in ideas.

Phil
