I'm finally getting into FCPX 10.4.4 as a newbie coming from Sony Vegas Pro. I have made/saved several different color presets giving them all different names for use with a couple different camcorders. Currently, I have several clips in the timeline that I have applied different named effects to. I would like to know if there is a way to identify which saved effect I used by the name I gave it? For example; One of my saved effects is named "50's Room." I used it in one of the clips earlier on in my edit but, I can't find the name "50's Room" anywhere within the video inspector
information. It would be nice to select a clip and have the name of the effect used. If there is, please let me know. I would sincerely appreciate it. Ray
I'm using FCPX 10.4.6 but I don't believe any version showed the actual self created preset name in the video inspector. It shows in the effects browser with the custom name, but in the video inspector the effect shows as a color board (or wheel, curve, etc.) based on how you created it. For example, if you created a custom color wheel adjustment and saved it as a preset named "50's Room", when you apply this to a clip in the timeline you will see a "color wheels 1" effect in the video inspector. If you have done previous grading on the clip, it would show up as "color wheels 2" or some additional color wheels correction. If your preset includes transforms, the only visible indication in the video inspector is the change with transform parameters - again no custom name is shown.
You can send feedback to Apple to request this feature, but as far as I can tell, custom preset names do not appear in the video inspector.
There are a few utilities (such as XFX-Handler) by Spherico that can show you all the effects applied in your projects/clips.
Thank you for the explanation....... Everything you stated is what I realized within the video inspector. With all the information that FCPX give, one would think that the preset effect would be included. Hopefully this will be available in future updates. The larger the project, the more it would be a nice to have this information for reflection. Thanks again, appreciate the help. Ray
Wouldn't it be nice if we could rename color corrections? Yes Apple, we have been requesting this for years.
In fact, wouldn't it be nice if FCPX would automatically apply the name of the effect including user created presets, instead of just "Color wheel 1/2" then allow the option of renaming. Motion does this, and this doesn't even require AI and Metal to figure it out.
Given that you may have hundreds of clips, there is no way of knowing what was applied to each clip in what order.
Another feature I'd like to see is a pop-up window for values of any adjustments done to the color wheels. Anytime you say make an adjustment to the exposure/saturation levels, a small window would appear and show % of correction change as you make the adjustments. This makes it easier to apply the same levels to clips. If you move the center point for Tint/Hue the values for all affected parameters should pop up while making the adjustments.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to leave or set default behavior for the disclosure triangles in the inspector window for all the color and audio adjustment layers. As it is now, the parameters collapse every time you move back and forth between clips or Timeline.
One behavior that is related to this that I find annoying is when working with audio, you must apply corrections to the component level, not the parent clip. So each time, you have to open the inspector, scroll down and select component "track" and apply correction to each component. With say dual mono channels, you can select more than one channel and apply that way, but moving the cursor back to timeline, the channels are deselected. When I need to loop selections, I need to make sure to start playback looping then go into the inspector and select the channels otherwise the channels become deselected until you re-select the component channels, and the info window reports that there are no effects applied to the clip(@parent level), Lots of extra clicks. Once I have selected the channels, I would like them to stay selected if I go to the Timeline and back to info window.
I totally agree with everything you stated........ those changes alone within FCPX would be nothing less than awesome while editing. It certainly would be nice if Apple would write this into their software next time around in an update.
