...NOT "rejected" or "unused" but MISSING. ie so you can easily check that you have not been over-zealous in deleting , cleaning up etc.

I have searched everywhere but can only find tutorials on relinking.

There is no option to show these under the obvious dropdown "view by", "sort by" etc menu options.... that I can find....

I only want to tell FCPX "ok, just show me all instances of [EXCLAMATION MARK Missing File]" in my browser, please.

Thanks...

To find any missing item, make sure you have the left sidebar set to the top event level (IOW are not filtering on anything). Then at the upper right make sure the filter is set to "All Clips".

Then In the search field of Event Browser, type "missing". This works for both proxy or orig. media files, depending on whether the viewer is set to proxy or orig. media.

There is one case where the file is not missing but has been changed. In that case search for "modified".

If you want to find whether the missing items are video, audio, or stills, set the filter to one of those and type "missing" in the search field.

Damn, it's just proven unreliable.
See attached screenshot.

I even restarted FCPX. This missing clip is in the same library, same HD etc etc.
Inexplicable that it's not showing up as a missing item.
Also, the clips which are shown contain no missing components that I can find.

Weird, but looks like I'm back to manually having to handle this... I need 100% efficacy...

The unreliability continues - see attached.
This clip should be coming up in the browser with an orange line indicating it is used, but nope.
FCPX claims otherwise....

*Postscript, this time when I restarted FCPX it rectified the problem and the orange line appeared.
That didn't happen in the first example though re: missing clip....

Remove the search term, click on the timeline clip, then do Shift+F to find that in the Event Browser. It should show an orange bar if that range is used in the currently-loaded project.

Note: used ranges are only for the currently-loaded project. IOW they aren't orange if used in somewhere in "some" project, only if used in the current timeline project.

Is it possible your search term is somehow filtering out the used range?

If the Shift+F doesn't show an orange bar, click on that clip in the Event Browser and observe in the Inspector "i" tab what library and what event it's in. Then click on that clip and do "Reveal in Finder" and check it's where you expect on your hard drive. There is a case where dragging bare clips or projects between libraries can cause mis-linked files.

The clip shows missing in the timeline, what about the Event Browser? If you (1) Remove the search filter, (2) Do Shift+F on the timeline clip, does it point to a red clip in the Event Browser? If it's not red in the event browser, check the clip location by doing "Reveal in Finder".

If you're using proxy mode try switching to view>orig. and see if that makes a difference. Links to external proxies are much more fragile and they can become invalid for various reasons. It's important to verify whether the red clip is missing orig. media or missing proxy.

If the clip in the Event Browser is red and says "missing", normally a search term of "missing" will find it.

If the clip is not missing in the Event Browser but shows missing in the timeline, it's possible a missing effect, or mis-linked file. To investigate this make a copy of your project via right-clicking on the project icon and selecting "Duplicate as Snapshot". Then open that snapshot of the project, select all clips in the timeline with CMD+A, then do edit>remove effects. See if the clip is still red.

Thanks @Joema.
What I need to do now is wait for this to happen again as I haven't been able to replicate the problem again just yet.
Once I get the same thing happening just as it originally occurred, I'll run through your advised steps!

@François-Xavier NOULENS

1. "didn't you optimize or generate proxy at some time ? 2. Everything is in the same Event "

1. No and 2. Yes

@Joema

"Remove the search term, click on the timeline clip, then do Shift+F to find that in the Event Browser."

Thanks, this has proven to be much more reliable, and usefully it also shows me where in the timeline the missing clip is. This found a few which I had not found myself due to relying on the previous unreliable process.

PS I have no idea what IOW stands for...?
