They applied a simple mask around the foot. Then they used an alpha glow around the mask. You can brighten, darken even blur the masked area. You can basically apply any other effects you want.

SliceX or PaintX would make short work of that sort of effect. Personally, I'd just draw it, animate it, track it, inside of Motion.

Any chance you know of a video showing how to do this? I feel like this should be easy, but having issues getting the mask and effects applied. Im super brand new to Final cut and tried several times to get this to work but cant. I looked for tutorials on masking, but everything i find seems to show layering videos etc.

I am not sure if that video was created using FCPX. I have never done any masking with FCXP but I will look into it this weekend. If I can replicate it I will try to post a tutorial. That being said it can be done really easy using Premiere Pro.

Basically the same process, apply the mask, adjust the mask, keyframe the mask. What specific issues are you having with the mask?

I've been playing around with this and getting a little further. I'm new to editing and come from a programming background, so the basic concepts are new to me.

I was applying the mask to the clip, but having issues. I then copied the clip (duplicated) and layered it on top of the original clip and applied the mask to the top layer with the affect. Changed the opacity to zero to allow the bottom clip to show through.

My issue now, is whatever effect i apply is applied to the entire mask. IF you look at the original clip i posted, the effect is surrounding the mask. The effect is on the "foot" in the clip, but the foot itself is not blurred or smoked out or anything, only the outline of the foot has the effect. I hope this makes sense.

Im making progress, just cant get the awesome effect Im trying to get :-(

Perhaps it cannot be done in FCPX. If this is an effect you will use all the time Premiere Pro might be a better option for you. It can be done in Premiere Pro real easy. I did not have time to test out FCPX last weekend but I will do it this weekend for sure because I am curious if it can be done or not using FCPX.

I really appreciate the help. I was really hoping FinalCut could do this since I already purchased FinalCut. This is something I will be using all the time as Im editing videos for my BJJ gym and when I saw this video of another gym It something that really stood out.

Thanks again for the offer to try and recreate it. I really appreciate it!

FCPX works a lot like Premiere Pro. I can duplicate the effect about 80% using FCPX with the exception of the effect around the masked area. That will require a plugin. I thing Ecto makes an alpha glow type plugin for FCPX. Do you really need the alpha glow type effect around the mask? I honestly don't think it looks good. I can make a quick tutorial if you want me to.
