Hey guys I'm a new FCPX user and I'm trying to figure out how to make the fade to black dissolve start earlier in the clip and then fade out slower/longer than the 1.06 sec max that it's at now. When I try to adjust duration nothing happens either. Would really appreciate the help.

It sounds as if you’re at the limits of the available media, that you need to shorten the clips to make e frames available for a longer overlap.

I know it's "old school" but you can always drop on a color clip (black or whatever you're fading to/from) and manually add the dissolves. That gives you much more flexibility to vary the dissolve timing on either end (although it won't help if you've just run out of video clip to dissolve from).

If the clip lacks sufficient media handles, you can retime the clip to make it longer (by slowing it down just a bit) - enough to add 8 or 10 frames at each end, so you can make the dissolve longer.

At 33:30 into this video, Hollywood editor Mike Matzdorff demonstrates a useful trick to avoid this. Note the keyboard command he uses to lift the clip and create a gap is OPT+CMD+ up arrow.

Note also once the transition effect is added, the clip becomes a secondary storyline and must be dragged by the "shelf" -- the little border on top.
