I am on a 27 inch iMac High Sierra 10.13.6 and using Final Cut Pro X 10.4.4
I recently purchased some tutorials from Ripple Training but when I double click the sparse image that opens up into a virtual drive, it does not show up within the event library of Final Cut Pro.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You don’t see it in the import window?

A Sparse Image is simply a virtual drive, which depending on the contents, can look to FCP like a hard drive or a camera card. In FCPX you'll want to open the Import window, as Tom says. It doesn't show up inside of an Event, not how things work.
