Hi,
is someone experiencing problems in updating to 10.5? I run os 10.15.7...but the problem seems to be in the App Store. it doesn't show the possibility to update fcpx, motion, compressor and logic. first it happens. the App Store anyway is working. I updated sync&link and other apps. Just wondering if I'm missing something...

I think that you must firstly update to Big Sur

I can download the updates without updating to Big Sur.
I haven't actually updated the apps because I'm working on current projects.

To clarify, the requirements spec on the App Store says you need 10.15.6 or above for FCPX 10.5.

If you do a search on Apple's main website for FCPX, it erroneously (sadly) says you only need Mojave, which I'm on and can't go higher. No joy downloading...

Interesting. Thanks. Did you try it on Mojave 10.14.6?

Yes, it was on 10.14.6. As well as an update not being flagged up, when you go to FCPX in the App Store, I could only open FCPX, not update.

I can’t test it out I wouldn’t ask. Could you zip the application and then move it to the trash. Would no application in the browser, what version downloads from the App Store.

I now run macOS 11 Big Sur and FCP 10.5 and the only problem so far are the Coremelt plugins which beachball the app. Waiting for updates.

I took FCPX off a backup of my normal Mojave editing volume, and rebooted. The App Store said FCPX needed 10.15.6 as in the attached picture. It looks like we are no longer offered a copy that works with a lower version of macOS.

If you can't update to Catalina, there is still an update to Pro Video Formats 2.2.0 to look out for in Software Updates.

That answers one question. Try downloading from the Purchased page without any FCP in the Applications folder.

iMac mid 2017.
Is there any advantage of upgrading my system and FCP without Big Sur the M1 chip?
Will I still benefit from the FCP improvements?
Besides the plugin issues which don't apply to me at the moment.

Hopefully my tests below will answer the question of whether we can use 10.5 on anything lower than Catalina. Sadly it doesn't seem so.

This is what I did.

Mojave with 10.5.10 installed on a Mac Pro 5,1 with a Radeon RX580 GPU (Sapphire Nitro+)
Deleted FCPX and emptied Trash.
Rebooted
Opened App Store and logged in.
Searched for FCPX and tried to download. It says that 10.15.6 is required and you have no other choice.
Go to Account and find Final Cut Pro.
Try and download and it says that 10.15.6 is required but suggests you can still download an old version for your OS.
As expected 10.4.10 was downloaded.

Next, I managed to install Catalina on a spare volume on my MacBook Pro 8,2 by using dosdude’s Catalina Patcher. ( dosdude1.com/catalina/ ) Not something I particularly wanted to do – it works, albeit a bit sluggish and would have other issues.

Once Catalina was running, I downloaded FCPX 10.5, made a zip and transferred it to the test Mojave volume on the Mac Pro. As expected, not only did FCPX show the No Entry icon, but double-clicking on it produced the message that it required 10.15.6…

Well, I tried!

don't know if it is related to the problem I had...but hope this could be helpful...

@ALBO
I would think there is an advantage as the update includes bug fixes as well as some new features that do not require M1.

Final Cut Pro 10.5

Improved performance and efficiency on Mac computers with Apple silicon.
Accelerated machine learning analysis for Smart Conform using the Apple Neural Engine on Mac computers with Apple silicon.
Option to create a copy of your library and automatically transcode media to ProRes Proxy or H.264 at various resolutions.
Export HLG high-dynamic-range projects with Dolby Vision 8.4 metadata for optimized playback on Apple devices.
Fixes an issue in which LUTs were not available in optimized or proxy clips.
Improves appearance of HDR thumbnails in the browser and timeline.
Improves reliability when previewing built-in sound effects in the browser.
Fixes an issue in which audio waveforms would not update in the inspector after adding a filter or making a volume change.
Fixes an issue in which chapter markers were not available when sharing.
Improves reliability when creating proxy media from non-square pixel interlaced clips.
Improves stability when applying stabilization and color balance during import.
Fixes an issue in which audio sync could drift when retiming clips.
Improves reliability with Social Media content positioning when using Smart Conform to switch between vertical and horizontal frame sizes.
Improves reliability when using onscreen Crop controls in the viewer.
Fixes an issue in which copying stills between libraries would result in duplicate files.
Includes built-in support for Avid DNxHR® and Avid DNxHD® decoding and playback.

Thanks.
I imagined there would be some benefits.
Do I really need to do a clean install? I dread that. Lazy am I ?
I usually backup and then upgrade.

I suppose that some would tell you that is the very best way to approach a Mac OS upgrade (as opposed to an interim version upgrade), BUT...I can tell you that I have personally never performed a clean install of either Mac OS or FCPX. I have always done (2) things with respect to this. 1. Have a current backup of my system, 2. Have a copy of the Mac OS (or FCPX if upgrading that) stored away just in case the upgrade creates an issue.
On one of our Mac Pro Towers from 2010 we have upgraded all the way to Mojave from the original OS and never did a clean install. We also maintain our systems pretty much weekly with backups, disk repair, cache cleaning, font management, apps and plugin updates, managing system clutter. etc., so maybe this helps - or at least it gives us peace of mind that it does.

Regular maintenance for years, macOS upgrades were always migrations, never any issues.
