I am unable to change transition times. I have my default transition time set at 1 sec. However, the transitions are put in at 6 frames. Attempts to change the transition time in the time line do not result in a in a change in time--stuck at 6 frames. I have deleted the FCPX preference file but this has not resolved my issue with changing transition times.
This may be because the clips you are applying the transitions to do not have sufficient handles at the outgoing and incoming sections of the clips. Try to trim a half second or so off of each the adjacent clips and reapply your transition. If this solves the problem then if you need the sections that you trimmed there are ways to deal with that. One way is to make a freeze or hold frame at the end of the first or beginning of the second clip to provide the needed media handles. Another way is to retime the clips to slow them just enough to give you the required handles.
The clip (29.97 FPS) that I am working with began life with length 1:15:00. I split the clip in half and then added an adjustment layer for each half. Next I created two compound clips from each halves with the adjustment layer.
I will give your suggestion a try to see if that resolves. If not, I will do a full un-install of FCPX and try again.
That implies to me that your clips do not have any media handles (extra media beyond the end frame). Since you cut them in half, each clip has nothing after the last frame to process the transition. There needs to be some footage to dissolve or wipe. I am fairly sure trimming some at the end of one clip and the beginning of the next will solve your problem. I would not bother to try reinstalling FCP - that almost never solves any problems. Your issue seems to be as described above.
