I just bought FCPX, Motion 5, and Compressor...
and about the no new features Motion has ... I finally understand, that after the step to kill Shake, .. Soundtrack .. now Color ...
Apple is not doing stuff for Visual FX professionals (adverts, movies etc...) !!
Motion 5 is like an effect maker for video editing or a better Livetype.. Right now, without third-party filters, motion can just begin projects that don't need any external help... no Sapphire .. RedGiant nor Boris plugins ... and no nodal compositing ...
Definitively FCPX is NOT oriented for hi-end editing... no EDL no DPX format no complex audio editing no color grading ... and motion is not for special effects ...
We still need a DaVinci Resolve ... Smoke, Nuke or Avid to make professional stuff !!!
Maybe next year we have FCPX like iWork, as an app for the iPhone ...
Of cousrse Motion 5 can't be compared to Nuke, but Adobe with After Efftects is now the king of motion graphic, often used too, for spécial effects and compositing in feature movies... so AE is not a Nuke either, but can be used for any kind of work ! plus it has the bigger support for third-party professionnal plugins that make it a stronger tool even more.
I remmember when Motion could be compared to AE, but Adobe has done a lot of improvements and technical investigation in new technologies that makes clearly the difference now between the too softwares.
You mean youbdo your keying in motion?
They can be competitor but After Effects has more on his back then Motion.
I have been a Apple Motion certify user since version 4 and have been using it since version 1.
Still find take that are a pain OR impossible to pull off in Motion.
I agree that in motion it's quite difficult to achieve a good chromakey..
The new motion 5 has a keyer that I just flew over, and look better... but I achieved very good results with DVGarage DVMatte Pro 3.
It's difficult to compare with hi-end products for difficult key situation, but for simple situations can be achieved.
The interest I have in fighting to use motion, like a post-production software, is because of it's realtime results, that allow me to be very productive and creative.
I usually use Nuke now in replacement to Shake, and the work I speak about is quite neat ...
but the flexibility of motion and its interface attract me a lot.
Nowadays strong compositing are mixed with motion graphics effects, and Nuke or Shake ... haven't the tools for it. That why I think that Motion 5 could find it's place has good compositing and graphic software... where you need to stay into the same software to achieve both things at the same time.
(where I think AE has taken a good place).
Motion 5 has a great render now, and its rotosplines have improved quality... but a nodal tool for compositing in motion would place it as a great competitor (something between shake and the simple nodes of combustion).
Warp tool would be great in motion, AE has good ones (pupet) and a the new rotobrush is incredibly useful for quick masks... and great plugins like Copilot Optical Flares ... Frishtluft Defocus ... would be welcome too.
I saw recently that Genarts Sapphire and Noise Industry (available now) will be ready for Motion 5 too.
