A new 4K frame size, a new box and new Thunderbolt 2 connectors. The just announced Io 4K from AJA has been designed to work with the new Mac Pro. New free capture and iOS software to download too.
AJA has an impressive list of products that grows every show. They range from glue products that convert signals, right up to the Corvid system that allows the user to zoom in on a region from a 4K source.
The cameras started to flash at the press event when the new Io 4K was announced. It was teased by saying it was a great addition to the new Mac Pro as it has two Thunderbolt 2 ports that allow for daisy-chaining.
The new Mac Pro isn't out yet, neither is the Io 4K which will become available at the same time it is released. It goes against the AJA policy of only announcing products that are shipping, but with the new Apple crate just around the corner, it made sense.
Key Io 4K features will include:
-- Portable 4K/UHD and HD/SD capture and playback across Thunderbolt™ 2
-- Use with the new Mac Pro for video output up to 4K at 10-bit quality
-- Backwards compatible with existing Thunderbolt hosts
-- 4x bi-directional 3G-SDI
-- 4K/UHD HDMI I/O
-- Simultaneous SDI and HDMI outputs
-- Real time 4K to HD down-conversion for HD-SDI and HDMI monitoring
-- 10-bit high-quality 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 workflow support
-- Two Thunderbolt(TM) 2 ports support hosting, daisy-chaining of displays, storage and more
-- 16-channel embedded audio on SDI
-- 8-channel embedded audio on HDMI
-- DB-25 analog audio output connector
-- XLR 12V power for battery or AC use
-- RS422 VTR control, Reference, LTC Input
-- Headphone jack and level control for mobile environments
Here is a very proud Nick Rashby, president of AJA Video holding up the unit. He said: "Io 4K leverages the latest technology in our industry, all in one sleek portable box. It bridges 4K workflows to HD, to the latest 4K and UltraHD displays, and to the Mac over the amazing Thunderbolt™ 2 interface."
And here is the back of the unit. The presentation explicitly mentioned Final Cut Pro X working with the unit (as you would expect) as well as Adobe Creative Cloud and AJA's Control Room application. (See below).

Also announced are two updates to free AJA software.
The AJA DataCalc has been upgraded with new frame sizes and codecs and is available on the iTunes store now for free. It's also had a makeover to fit in with the new flat iOS design.
Maybe the best news is that there is now an iPad version.
AJA also announced the public beta of Control Room. This is cross platform ingest, playback and output software, free for all owners of AJA desktop I/O products. Essential if you are editing in FCPX and need access to video from a tape source or need to lay back to tape.
