I put FCP X to a real test today. I first tried a share to Hard Drive using a 4 hour and 45 minute timeline comprising 4 clips, one of 3 hours and 35 minutes, and 3 others of about 23 minutes each.

The share to HD failed with the same error message.

Then I tried a share to DVD (dual layer disc) using the same timeline. This was successful, yet I changed nothing except the destination.

Hmmmmm....it is a mystery to me and very frustrating. :(

Hi Rich,

It is a mystery to me. I have tried several different approaches to solving this issue. The least productive was a search on the net for a solution. There are lots of comments but no specific fix for this.

Among other things I have tried is a cold start of my Mac Pro; ensuring no background apps running; Onyx cleanup etc.; deleting generated project files and so on. Some times after doing this, FCP X shares OK, but then fails again. I would not care so much if I could at least produce an IMG (ISO) file then burn that to disc, but that fails too.

For the most part I have had to revert to using Premiere Pro and my PC again, so did I waste my money buying a Mac Pro and FCP X? Should I have to buy Apple’s Compressor software to get FCP X to work, I don’t think so?

Most of my work is straightforward and simple VHS conversion, with minor edits, nothing complicated.

I am thinking that the solution lies with the software developers, but I don’t think they can be giving this issue any attention. Maybe they pushed this release to market without adequate testing, beta or otherwise.

I am really miffed about the whole situation.

Regards,

Peter B.

I tried a new twist today. I selected share to DVD, but changed the output device to Hard Drive to see if it would vreat an IMG file.

It failed with the same error message.

Today I tried a few more shares to DVD. They all failed, same way.

The Share Operation "DVD" has Failed.
The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.Compressor.CompressorKit.ErrorDomain error -1.)

I cleaned out all of the Generated Project Files too, but that made no difference.

There was an update installed today to FCP X. ould it be that?

Today I cleaned out the all the Generated Project Files again then shared a new project to DVD. All worked OK with no problems. :) Maybe I should simply clean out all the Generated Project Files before sharing another to DVD?

I will be trying (burning) many more over the coming weeks.

Any comments?

Russ, I will try that tomorrow it is getting a bit late here.

I reduced the duration on the one that failed to about 7 minutes. It produced a master MOV file... no crashes or error messages. The MOV file plays as expected.

I shall try and burn some more full length stuff tomorrow. I have been out all day at a model train show buying a few things and now it is time for "Smileys People" and a Scotch and Soda or two.

Russ, I will try that tomorrow it is getting a bit late here. But one thing that I did do after several failures to burn (share) the same project to DVD was to clean out all the Generated Project Files. Then I tried a share to DVD again and it worked. :)

Now the real proof is if it repeatable as in a reliability test.

I closed all the open apps, restarted and tried the a burn of the same project, then the share to DVD worked successfully.

I tried some other projects from the same source and similar size etc, but now nothing will share to DVD. :( I keep getting the same error message:

The Share Operation "DVD" has Failed.
The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.Compressor.CompressorKit.ErrorDomain error -1.)

Being a newbie to Macs and FCP X it is all very baffling to me.

Hmmmm...Any suggestions? :)

Last time this happened to me it was because of the picture I was using for the DVD.

Might be a simple checkbox? Or something similar?

Hi JT,

The project timeline was a plain Jane one with no edits, still pictures, cuts or adjustments etc. Just one big clip from start to end from an AVI. I did put some chapter markers in but I can't imaging it could have been that.

What version of FCP X and OS are you running? Do you have Compressor installed as well? If so, what version?

Hi Ronny, My OS is Yosemite 10.10.2 and FCPX is 10.1.4. I do not have Compressor installed.

FCPX has been OK up to this. I tried the burn again, and it completed OK; must have been an anomaly. I did not change any settings nor did I run Onyx or any other apps.

Later if there is time today, I may try another (different) AVI, that needs to be burned to disc and see if the issue is repeatable. If not later today, maybe tomorrow or over the weekend. I will keep you posted.

Best regards,

I have successfully burned a number of DVDs with FCPX, however today one failed to complete. I got an error message:

The Share Operation "DVD" has Failed.
The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.Compressor.CompressorKit.ErrorDomain error -1.)

The DVD estimated size (by FCPX) was less than 4GB. There was nothing unusual about the source file (Event) or the timeline project. The source file was an AVI. I followed the same process that I had used previously with successful results. :(

Would anyone care to throw some light on this for me?

Thanks in advance for any help.

So endeth the first lesson (test)...so far so good. The next chapter will be to import some video again from the tape deck, Laird Convertor and FireWire except this time to the Mac.

Peter B.

I hooked up one of my DV cameras and had no issues importing video via FireWire to FCPX.

Then I tried a short video clip from a tape deck to Mac via my Laird 5500. The image in the import window was a bit shaky but the final result was good, no shaking at all. I burned the clip to an mov file...it worked fine in VLC and Quick Time. But I will be happy to get my Laird 6000D back from the repair shop. I used to do all my own repair work, but decided as I dod not have a schematic I would pass on this one. :(

In tried to upload the mov file here, but it is too big at 40MB. Ah well take my word for it, the result was totally acceptable considering the ancient original. :)

Haha, I see what you mean. Yep it's quite a jump but I think you will find it is worth doing it.

You don't need to purchase FCP X right away if you are not sure. There is a fully functional trial that will allow you to evaluate the application.

Hi Ronny, I just noticed that Apple charged my AMEX card for the FCPX app. I cannot find anything on the Apple Store page for FCPX about a 30 day trial period. Could you point me to a page where I could find the info I have not been able to find any information.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Peter,

Glad you are having a good time with FCP X :)

If you are using the Laird 6000D or similar you will be able to import from the converter straight into FCP X because this model has time code output. OTOH if you are using a converter that has no time code output you will have to capture the video using QT player or another digitizing app first and then import the digitized video into FCP X.

- Ronny

So far so good Ronny. I just realised that my 6000D is in the shop for repair and my 6000C has some bad electrolytics in it. It is par for the course I don't have any replacements either. I don't think my 5500 has time code output so if I need to copy more tape I can still create AVIs using Premiere Pro system as a stop gap. I should call the shop next week to see if there is any progress on my repair. If it is not ready, I will do a work around...or maybe the shop can lend me a "box"

Although I have enough AVI files to keep me busy for several months non-stop with FCPX.

Well I installed FCPX yesterday evening, viewed a couple of video lessons, then today put it through some simple tasks.

1. Imported some AVI files. These had previously been created from a multi standard VHS tape deck via a Laird Convertor, then via FireWire to a Dell Desktop running Premiere Pro 2. I had no issues importing them into an event. :)

2. Burn a DVD. Dropped the AVI files into a project timeline, did a little trimming at the tail end then burned them to a DVD disc. The disc played fine in the Mac Superdrive, a Windows 7 Laptop and a Pioneer DVD player. :)

So endeth the first lesson (test)...so far so good. The next chapter will be to import some video again from the tape deck, Laird Convertor and FireWire except this time to the Mac.

Stand by for further bulletins from Peter B's Skunkworks lab, though now it is almost time for a round of golf first though. ;)

Your system should be able to handle DVCPRO without any issues. But 8 GB RAM is really the minimum required to run FCP X smoothly. If you feel you got performance issues, especially on long projects with many clips, upgrading the RAM to 16 GB will make huge difference.

I shall see how it goes. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, yes?
