clips keep going off line and getting renamed

Hi . I have an old version of FCP 6.06 . Every time I shut my computer down and re open it , many of the clips go off line, when I try and reconnect them it seems as if they've been given different names so it is impossible to find the original clips. Any solution will be very much appreciated. I cannot even begin to describe how frustrating this is.
