Hi FCP.co community,

I am trying to figure out how to get an effect done in a popular Michael Jackson song - Black or White . The faces morphing I am looking to see if there is a free way using FCP X to accomplish this effect?

Morphing is quite a complex effect. This is the best plugin that I know for morphing. Inside fcpx I doubt there is something similar or something that can give you a good result.

As Andrea mentioned - morphing is a complex process…
for a morphCut, a method was described here:
www.fcp.co/final-cut-pro/tutorials/1534-...r-correction-in-fcpx
'abusing' optical flow ..

for stills, there are several tools, free MorphX for example, avail.

Trouble is, in that MJ video, the heads are moving - and I doubt, you'll find such an elaborated software for free .... good work has its price, to mention that ;)

And for future reference:
This section is for posting HowTos, not requests ....

If you line up the scale and eyes you can use motionvfx mMorphCut as a poor mans morph. It's not free, and it will not look like MJs video. But it's cooler than a dissolve. I've used it for morphing people into people, or suddenly having something appear in someone's hand in a more creative way. Very useful.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Will try some of the methods suggested to see which will produce the best outcome.

Well now you can try the new morph transition in FCPX, with a long duration, see what happens. Just be aware that any movement in your videos, during that transition, will freeze and morph.

That was the 2nd I tried with that - prepped two stills/portraits in Pixelmator to have the eyes aligned, added the MorphCut - no joy :( The algorithm got confused by the two too different pics, everything wobbled across the screen like pudding.

No, still suggesting: for stills, use designated apps, like the one I mentioned before...........

Did you try apple transition or morphcut plugin? I really hoping this will work for me. Like apple saw this forum and decided to create the transiition lol. Anyway, I am delighted for this transition!

oops, my wrong, I tried FCPX' own flow-transition, and two portraits of BIll Murray and George Clooney … ok, that IS a challenge for any morph-algorithm

Not enough control for Morphing

Morphing is a distinctive effect that is best known from the movie "Terminator 2" as well as the Michael Jackson music video "Black and White".

Terminator 2 and Michael's music video aren't as similar as you'd think, T2's 3D geometry morphing is almost nothing like the 2D face morph from the other one.

mMorphCut was meant to be as simple to use as possible so you end up with a single setting: small/medium/large motion for detecting matching features on your video. You can't control it on a per pixel basis but it will give you a much more organic animation than when using the built in transition.
Best of the best.. motionVFX :]
