Took me a while to figure out that the link to maclife broke the forum software so the post didn't show up. Fixed now :)

So you can't pick photos from an Event or from the Media Browser? You can only get photos floating around on your hard drive?

Hi Ben,

Indeed this was a design decision. If you have a look at the plugin in Motion, AE, FCP7 you will see that there are drop-zones so you can also use project media.

In Final Cut Pro X the FxFactory file chooser allows a rendering pipeline where FxFactory can be smart about resizing the still image to a manageable size. This is currently not possible when using drop-zones in FCPX. Unfortunately when using drop-zones in Final Cut Pro X a lot of users could run into trouble because they would use images much larger than needed (think a 10K image on an SD timeline) and the plug-in can't be smart about dealing with the problems that result in that case, such as running out of video memory.

We hope to add drop-zone support to Pan and Zoom in FCPX the future.

Regards,

Niclas

So you're saying it's not possible to allow editors to chose something directly from an Event or the Media Browser if it's not a Drop Zone?

Drop Zones are the way to get project media into an effects generator yes.

So, by not using a Drop Zone, you can't allow folks to select media directly from an Event? Really? Just trying to understand the mechanics behind this limitation.

If not with a dropzone, how else would you get project media fed into a generator?

Um, the way y'all are doing it without a Drop Zone?

I'm sorry you lost me, I think we are talking past each other.

There are two ways to get user content fed into a generator:

1. Drop Zones (for project media already inside the host application)
2. File Chooser (for a file on disk)

We chose not to use drop zones at this time for the reasons I mentioned. This leaves us with the File Chooser, which is what is implemented in the Pan and Zoom implementation in Final Cut Pro X.

If you look at FCP7, Motion and AE you will see that the pan and zoom plugin supports both Drop Zones and File Chooser there.
