Hi,

Latest software version on a late 2013 i5 iMac with a G-raid drive. I edit pieces of around two three minutes, with some basic titles and subtitles. I notice that FCP is getting slow. My fingers are faster than the programme.

Could this be the program? Or perhaps the external drive which makes a lot of searching noise?

btw: time machine is off during editing and I repaired permissions

thanks

How is the external drive connected to the iMac? T'bolt or USB?

Thunderbolt. Its a G-Technology G-RAID 4TB. A complete restart with pram zap let's run things a bit smoother now. Only constant crashes now with subtitles but that's a FCP X thing I've read...

Hoi Peter,

Crashes on titles is NOT normal in FCP X. Nor is it normal that you need to zap your pram to get regular performance out of your system.

Would you do a test? Create a new admin user account and launch FCP X with this account. Open one of your regular projects and verify if your computer runs faster now, and if you still get crashes on titles. Then post back.

I'll do that thanks. Let u know. But it seems I'm not the only one with a title issue:

I don't know what could have caused the issue for those 3 posters. But more than a million people use FCP X on a regular basis, and adding titles is a very common thing. So, if this was a general problem, I presume we would see thousands of posts like these and people would be running around screaming and cursing at Apple. Fortunately, this is not the case.

OTOH, some third-party title templates are notorious for causing crashes, especially those coming from Pixel Film Studios. If you have any of these it would be wise to try them one by one and remove the bad ones. Complex title templates, even some from Apple, can sometimes be problematic on systems with limited graphics cards or low RAM. But that's system-specific and not a general problem.

So let's first see why your system has problems, and then we can tackle the title issue you have.

Don't know either. But I ran a quick test on a new account. Only one crash. FCP feels smooth. I use the basic title for subtitling. So perhaps it's an idea to trash the prefs on my own account and give it a new try.

Trashing your user prefs may help, but not if your account directory is corrupted. In that case you will need to restore you user directory. Let us know how this goes.

Do you have any Pixel Film plugins at all? If so, this thread might be useful: discussions.apple.com/thread/7168652?start=0&tstart=0

No Pixel Film plugins. I'll give it another try. First system shutdown. It's weekend in the Netherlands. :) Keep you posted.
