I'm trying to configure an efficient but not overly expensive iMac Pro and in need of some advice.
My long term plans include shooting, editing and producing several green screen projects for YouTube. I'll be using Panasonic DSLRs and camcorders. The videos will range from 1 to 5 to 30 minutes. In addition, I will also be creating social media marketing content and short films.
These are the base iMac Pro specs:
Eight-core Intel® Xeon™ W 3.2 GHz
32GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM
Radeon Pro Vega 56 graphics processor with 8GB of HBM2 memory
What would be the best components to upgrade at the time of purchase and why?
Will the 3.2 GHz processor work well with 64 GB RAM and the Radeon Pro Vega 64 with 16GB of HBM2 memory?
Is there any benefit to upgrading to the 3.0GHz 10-core Intel Xeon W processor?
Is a 2 TB SSD internal drive really needed, or is 1 TB fine?
Will the base specs suffice for green screen projects?
Could a 60 minute green screen project be edited with the base computer without any issues?
Everyone has an opinion on this, and here's my 2 cents.
I have an iMac Pro with the Vega 64 GPUs and love it. I know a couple of folks with the Vega 56 GPUs and they complain. From what I've seen and heard, the 56's are not worth it.
8-core will be enough, and the system drive depends on what your needs are. If you're running fine with 1TB or less now, then you don't need a larger system drive.
I have 32GB RAM and have never come close to using it all up. If I were on a budget, I'd get 16 to save money, you'd be good. I've never seen a Mac (outside of a science lab) use that much RAM at one time. Even with a 1 hour TV show, I don't see that much RAM used. But, if you can afford it, 32 would be the maximum RAM I'd put in a video editing machine.
64GB RAM will be a waste, nothing over 32 will really help, you'll never notice any improvements with anything over 32 GB RAM..
I have no issues with the Vega 64 GPUs.
Doesn't matter what GPU you get, they all work just fine with all the other components. I value the number of cores over clock speed on a GPU. The difference .2 GHz makes is negligible. The difference 2 cores can make is more significant. But if you can afford more cores AND faster clock speed on a GPU, go for it.
I do a lot of fast turnaround broadcast producing news reports, commercials, plus 1/2 hour and hour-long local TV shows. I do green screen daily. I do a lot of work with 3D models using mO2 in Motion and in FXCPX with no real issues.
