Hey Tom. Alex describes where he's finding these strings in his blog posts. They're well worth the read.

It looks like we're definitely headed for FCPXML 1.3- based on both code and some collateral evidence of it's support in the newest RedCineX.

I didn't mean to sound as if I doubted it, just curious where the information was coming from.

I find it utterly fascinating that the new iMovie contains BOTH FCPX and Motion. I can imagine only 2 reasons for this:

Either it was just easier to built it this way- essentially take FCPX (which itself contains Motion code), then wall off higher-end features for a consumer front end...

OR there is indeed a broader iMovie/FCPX cross-application agenda.

Both are equally intriguing.

As far as I understand it, FCPX 10.0.9 also contains a subset of Motion, and Compressor as well.

In cased you missed it (I did). iMovie 2013 can import mts without the original card directory structure. Here is some sample C100 footage from Neuman Films neumannfilms.net/2013/04/05/canon-c100-raw-footage/ :

Yup. FCPX has contained a codebase of Motion and Compressor since 10.0- so that FCPX can run Motion generated templates and effects, even if Motion isn't installed.

Hey tpayton I'm noticing that none of your MTS files are over 30 seconds. I can import raw MTS files into FCPX fine but they always get truncated to 30 seconds if they are longer than that. Why? I don't know, I guess FCPX just doesn't want to deal with more than 30 seconds of an MTS clip. Same thing happens in Quicktime I believe.

Are you talking about the current version of FCP or iMovie 10? How are you importing .mts into FCP?

I've never been able to import MTS into FCPX. This is what happens if I try to import that same footage into 10.0.9.

Oh and I tried one that was a over a minute. Worked fine.

Tom - I was speaking of iMovie 2013, which is version 10.0. It really is confusing since we are mining for FCP 10.1 gold here, and yet talking about iMovie. ;)

I know you were speaking about iMovie. Redfer said "I can import raw MTS files into FCPX fine"

I want to know how he did that.

Is it December yet?

How about let's say we're 2 weeks from release on Tuesday, December 3rd.

I think I can manage that.

I would think that Apple is chomping at the the bit to release the Mac Pro as well as FCP 10.1. For businesses like mine, end of the year purchases are a large consideration for US taxes. The sooner this stuff is released the sooner businesses all over will be snatching up Mac Pros.

I'm still debating about getting a MacPro this year or getting maxed out iMac. I know the Mac Pro will be faster, but I don't know if it warrants the extra $2K at least, for getting one above a maxed out iMac. (I'm figuring $1K for a display ,which is included with the iMac, and then $500 for extra RAM and then $500 for the additional cost above a $2500 iMac.)

I'm sure once we see the benefit of those multiple GPUs that $2K won't be a big deal.

On the other hand, the longer FCPX stays in the "oven" so to speak, the better!

I agree. While I think there's a possibility we might have to wait 'til the 10th- I think that's the outside. The 17th is getting just too darn close to Christmas.

We might see some "soft confirmation" of a release date if Apple makes the MapPro available for preorder with a ship date in the next week or so.

But with the unceremonious way the rolled out the iPadMini Retina, they could just as easily just flip the switch on the store and have them shipping the same day.

I'm really hoping Apple will have a media event specifically around the new Mac Pro and FCPX 10.1. It would be great if they used that to demo new features of both and maybe introduce a new display line-up, like keep the current TB display as an entry level (but price drop it), add TB2 display at the current TB price and resolution, add TB2 4K display. Three display line-up would now make sense.

I think an event targeted to the post production and/or creative community, would be good PR. Done right it could counter a lot of the continuing negativity.

I agree targeted media events would be a good idea. They have the streaming capacity to deliver messages to specific users- but they seem to be adverse to using it.

But you're going to be disappointed if you think Apple's going to do a MacPro/Pro apps specific event now before release. I'd be satisfied if they started using more video on the FCPX product page. The text articles don't really do it for me the way the old Cohen Bros/Fincher video segments did.

I'd be thrilled to be wrong- but look for the MacPro and whatever software gets refreshed to just pop up on the store as per usual.

I totally agree. But Apple gave a lot of time to the Mac Pro and professionals at the last event. Plus the "in action" isn't exactly about creating cat videos for youtube.

I'm thinking that they are going to need more explanation for 10.1 that just a list of features on the web site.

Just a few days to go.

What a great idea. Making a video about a video editing app. ;)

I think LogicProX was a bigger leap, and it was left to a Product page (with video clips) update.

While there are some foundational changes in 10.1. I don't think they're so far out that they're going to cause enormous problems. Certainly it's going to be no where near as drastic as the initial "X" switch was.
