I'd like to see a 3rd option, "favourite", "customisable", "rejected". The new one is obviously re-namable. The option to add any number of "customisable" subsets of "favourites"might also be nice.
Id like to have more options in the first, fast setup of metadata before going to "keyword collections".
After keyword collecting it would give a great flexible system for what is/isn't being displayed in the "event browser".
Instead of favourite why not just use the terminology that already exist in the production like circle and etc..?
Dave_EP wrote: Why not just have the section as a rateable selection, such as 1,2,3,4,5 etc instead of just favourite or reject?
You can create a star system quite easily with keywords. It works great. Especially when using the keyboard shortcuts to assign them. Then we add notes. Those notes and keywords will then get transferred to the timeline when editing.
I totally agree, but the poster wanted to use the favourites
Personally, I don't use them much. I use reject to hide stuff I don't want, but I keyword the rest so it's much easier to find what I'm looking for, rather than "what did I like" ?

Forgive me, I didn't read the entire post (this thread is getting quite long)
Favorites are actually called "ratings" internally in the XML, so perhaps Apple might expand them to include star ratings in upcoming versions.
However, Favorites are a range based "sub clip" feature, just like Keywords. However, they are limited in that they don't allow overlap, while keywords do. Keywords are also much more flexible because they allow the keywords themselves and their notes to be searchable and viewable in the timeline.
There is actually nothing that favorites (ratings) can do that keywords can't do. They are in fact a limited version of keywords.
See here in the event browser a 37 minute multicilp with use of star ratings and notes:
The story can be easily seen from these notes and ratings and an edit can be assembled in a timeline, and the notes still be searchable. Notice we had to let a few "1 stars" into the timeline:
I started when FCPX, was first released, running over my rushes in the "Event Browser" and marking off "Favourites" and "Rejected". Then I'd hide rejected and set my keyword collections from the favourites and unmarked clips. This gives a bit of display option in the event browser while key wording and obviously the colour coding.
Then I started making keyword collections out of my rejected. Not using as rejected clips, but rejected and less favourable.
What I want to do now is have the dedicated "Rejected" option back, and expand the subsets of favourites/unmarked to at least 3.

It's just making them less limited than they are, but no where near as featured as keyword collections.

That makes great sense. It seems like Apple, with FCPX and now the new iMovie 2013, is adopting much of the terminology and functionality of Aperture. Take a look at what is in Aperture filter menu. Would this be fantastic to have in FCPX?
FCPX's equivalent seems pretty wimpy in comparison:
Worth a feature request big time.

Favourites and Rejects have been stored as Ratings in XML files. Now that ratings can have names, perhaps there will be more kinds of rating in Final Cut.
Looks like ratings will be applied as markers from now on (like keywords) - probably because we'll also be able to apply keywords to project timelines.
Logic X seems updated too. I'm getting a message that additional content is available for download. Looks like more Drummer content only at the moment.

Ratings carry over from the older version, it is the fact that they can have names that might help support Aperture star ratings and more. Your example doesn't have something like name="3 stars" in it.

I don't use "Aperture", but I do use the ratings in iPhoto. I tend to mark up how complete a picture is, 1 star means I had a quick look made some test adjustments, 2 means a bit more etc.
I'm sure I could find a way to slip them into my workflow, but if each star could optionally be a named category that would great.
Looking at that Aperture screenshot made me think, the coloured labels could maybe work for passing through visual reference to the timeline.

Though Aperture got it's 3.5 update after the October Event, the stage presentation seemed to indicate it would also be update for the MacPro. Aperture is still using Apple's old UI language, so another update must be coming.

Apple spend from September 2011 to October 2012 pushing out multiple feature updates [10.0.1, 10.0.3, and 10.0.6]. 10.1 will be the first update since then- 14 months.
It will be interesting to see how FCPX development progresses from here forward.
Have they settled down into an annual cycle now, or will we go back to more feature-oriented point updates thru 2014- then things will slow down again towards a 10.2 released in 2015.
As curious as I am, I'll just be happy when 10.1 is out.

We'd normally do that in Motion, it's what it's for ….

I've been an ardent FCPX for two years. Sadly, if those years have taught me anything, it's not to set high expectations on the next upgrade. Once burned, twice shy.
But I'm still crossing my fingers...

Yeah I think this is an important point. We already have a pretty amazing program and I have no doubt that we are in for a significant update but realistically it is not going to be any thing like as earth shattering as the introduction of the original FCPX. My udders are telling me 3 things, workflow, workflow and workflow. I am guessing that many a workflow tweak will also take some time before it kicks in and will be more relevant for people in a collaborative work flow process. Like how many of the FCP X editors in here are collaborating as of now? My guess is way under 10% but the goal posts are as always shifting
